The eruption took place at the Showa Crater, producing a 2,200-meter-high column of ash — an astonishing sight — leading to the alert level being raised from 2 (restrictions around the crater) to 3 (entry and traffic controls). Between January and September 2015, the Showa Crater of Sakurajima had over 700 eruptions, but none were as large as this one, hence the alert level was raised to 3.
