Due to the major earthquake in Kaohsiung at 3:57 AM on February 6, THSR has suspended service south of Taichung. A large number of passengers have crowded Taichung THSR Station, and connecting transfer services have reached their limit. THSR urges passengers heading to areas south of Taichung not to continue rushing to the station for rides; today many scheduled reserved-seat trains have been canceled, and passengers being required to repurchase non-reserved seat tickets have also sparked dissatisfaction. Whether THSR service south of Taichung will operate normally on February 7 will be announced at 9 PM on February 6. The relevant ticket refund policies are announced by THSR as follows.
[Updated 2016.02.06 15:25] THSR announces that the Taichung–Chiayi section has been repaired, and starting at 16:02, an additional all-non-reserved-seat train per hour will be added to evacuate passengers.

Kaohsiung Earthquake – Operational Schedule Adjustments
Taiwan High Speed Rail has been severely affected by the Kaohsiung earthquake today (6th). After track inspections, it was found that the overhead catenary system's alignment and structure were damaged at the Guiren section in Tainan, with multiple insulators broken and cantilevers fractured. THSR has assessed that the section south of Taichung definitely cannot resume normal operations today. Passengers are urged to adjust their itineraries or use alternative transport.
In addition, as the transfer and connecting transport options around THSR Taichung Station have currently reached maximum capacity, THSR urgently appeals to passengers planning to go to areas south of Taichung today to take other modes of transportation and not board the THSR. THSR has deployed additional personnel and sought support from third-party partners for full-scale emergency repairs. Whether normal operations will resume tomorrow (7th) will be announced externally at 9 PM tonight.
The ticket-related handling procedures for February 6 are explained as follows:
1) For passengers who purchased trains affected by the earthquake resulting in delays or cancellations, if the ticket has not been used, they may bring the original ticket to any station ticket window within one year from the original travel date to process a full refund, free of charge; if passengers still wish to take the THSR, they may use the original ticket to travel on subsequent trains on a space-available basis within one year, or exchange for a reserved seat ticket on another train that still has available seats.
2) For passengers who originally purchased tickets to stations south of Taichung today, if they disembark at Taichung Station, the fare for the unused portion will be refunded, and passengers may process the refund at any station ticket window within one year with the ticket.
3) In addition, out of care for passenger transport during the Spring Festival period, THSR is providing transfer services to TRA or bus services at Taichung Station for the aforementioned passengers affected by the earthquake. The transfer costs this time will be covered by THSR on a special case-by-case basis.
