Encounter That Light: The Treasure Hill Art Light Festival is Here

Nestled in a corner of Taipei City, Treasure Hill is like a beacon in the city, guiding people through the bustling urban life to pursue their long-unforgotten dreams and treasures. The 2016 Treasure Hill Environmental Art Light Festival, themed “Encounter That Light,” kicks off on February 21 for a month-long visual feast. Featuring artists from various fields, the festival is divided into three major sections: opening events, art installations, and a series of workshops. It invites everyone to come to Treasure Hill to “encounter” a moment of beauty and discover a different kind of “that light.”

This year’s light festival exhibition brings together multiple artists. Invited creator Li Mingdao presents his classic robot artworks, creating a uniquely whimsical atmosphere in Treasure Hill. Artist Niu Junqiang unveils the large-scale outdoor light installation , where neon words glow vividly at night. Light and shadow artist Jiang Jiyang, originally from Dadaocheng, leads the “Wadou” team to craft an urban resting space by integrating Treasure Hill’s historical background with a vocabulary of light and shadow. Artist Chen Yijie reinterprets anime colors using tube light installations scattered across historical fractures, resembling tiny stars twinkling on the ground. Artist Zheng Xianyu harnesses electricity generated by plant and microbial growth to power artificial light sources and sound. Artist Ye YuJun attempts to portray a fluorescent atmosphere combining video, lighting, and graffiti within the dreams of herself and other dreamers. Artist Lin Shuyu uses thread as a medium for message transmission and energy carrying, shaping the interface between the real and the virtual. Resident artist Niwa Youtaro creates unexpectedly delightful outcomes using everyday materials. Artist Wang Pei-tD extends her residency project to offer perspectives on Taiwan society’s questions of existence and integration for the “outsider” communities. The micro-cluster art teams residing in Treasure Hill also specially offer a series of workshops. Through diverse hands-on courses, they enrich participants’ experience during the festival.
