What makes a true movie enthusiast? Beyond memorizing every line of dialogue, Christopher Moloney, a journalist by profession, takes his passion further by deliberately seeking out filming locations he’s seen on the big screen. What sets him apart—as a photography lover as well—is that he doesn’t just snap a scenic photo and leave. Instead, he prepares movie stills in advance, then recreates the scene on-site with a composite shot that highlights a time-traveling sense of place.

Most of the filming locations Moloney chooses to photograph are iconic scenes from famous Hollywood blockbusters, so many people can instantly recognize the spots (even if they don’t know the exact location names) and name the movies they’re from. Although Hollywood is located in Los Angeles, California, the majority of film shoots actually take place in New York City on the East Coast—after all, NYC is the most iconic representation of America.

With Hollywood’s high volume of film production, shooting locations span across the United States. For example, the running scene in Sylvester Stallone’s "Rocky" was filmed at the Philadelphia Museum of Art steps. The autobiographical film "Forrest Gump" was shot in various locations across the U.S., and one of the spots Moloney found is in Savannah, Georgia. As for the classic "Days of Being Wild," the background behind lead actor James Dean is actually Los Angeles, with the filming taking place at Griffith Observatory—not far from Warner Bros.’ studio lot.
