For travelers from warm climates, it’s hard to imagine that this vast expanse of snow is actually a lake. Every winter, when Lake Akan in eastern Hokkaido freezes over, it transforms into this surreal landscape, with thick snow piling up to form hiking trails exclusive to winter — these are all part of the unique charm of the northern land during the winter season.

Winter in Akan is full of fun from the early morning, and a morning stroll is one of its highlights. Because the lake is so vast, the snow in the center of Lake Akan is constantly blown by the cold wind, forming delicate ice crystal snowflakes that bloom in the direction of the wind. These icy blooms melt quickly under the sunlight, making for a fleeting yet magical morning sight.

To witness the winter scenery, we brave the piercing morning wind and trudge carefully through the snow. Even though we know the lake ice is tens of centimeters thick, walking on the snowy surface still feels a bit nerve-wracking. Fortunately, the guide keeps a close eye on the ice conditions, and following behind them allows us to walk with peace of mind.

When we reach the center of the lake, the sun is slowly rising behind Mount Akan. As the sunlight shines down, the snowy ground sparkles with tiny lights — it turns out that the ice crystals in the snow are reflecting the sun’s rays, creating this dreamlike scene that soothes any disappointment from not seeing snowflakes.

Beyond the stunning lake views, you can also experience the thrill of riding an ice motorcycle or take a moment to enjoy the peaceful fun of ice fishing. Vendors drill holes in the ice and set up tents, and visitors can easily try their hand at ice fishing by simply renting a fishing rod. The caught pike can be taken straight to a nearby restaurant and fried into tempura. Fresh pike tempura sprinkled with a bit of salt is incredibly flavorful and is a must-try delicacy when visiting Lake Akan in winter.
