The North Coast is home to a “Taiwanese version of the Moai statue” — resembling a man pursing his lips as he gazes into the distance

The Moai statues of Easter Island in Chile are world-famous, but now you don’t have to leave Taiwan to see them — you can find one right here in Shen’ao, New Taipei City. The Facebook page “How to Explore Keelung” recently shared photos of the Xiangbiyan rock formation at Shen’ao. Over time, wind and sea erosion have shaped the rocks into what looks like a massive human face looking up to the sky — a true Taiwanese Moai statue.

Located in Ruifang District, New Taipei City, Shen’ao Cape boasts abundant sea-eroded landforms, among which the Xiangbiyan scenic area is the most famous. In addition to the massive rock formation, the hillside is covered with towering mushroom-shaped rocks, making it a hidden gem for admiring unusual rock formations in northern Taiwan.
