Recently, Mr. Wang Feng, a leading figure in China's rock music scene and brand ambassador for The North Face, successfully arrived in Dali, Yunnan. As the guiding mentor for the fifth stop of this year’s "Finding the Pioneers Around Us" event—Land of Ultimate Bliss—Wang Feng led his team in China’s birthplace of original music, Dali, Yunnan, to seek the spirit of original music and musicians who tenaciously pursue their dreams. As the final stop of this edition, this journey also signals the upcoming conclusion of the event.

Dongjing music is a traditional folk instrumental genre with a long history, praised by UNESCO and considered a precious cultural heritage of all humanity. In Heqing County, Dali, generations of folk artists have preserved Dongjing music through their lifelong, low-profile dedication, enabling its century-long legacy. On this Ultimate Bliss journey, Wang Feng and his team followed the trail of music here, where Dongjing musicians surprised them by performing "In Full Bloom" on leaf instruments, leaving Wang deeply moved into prolonged silence. Besides enjoying traditional Dongjing music, he also engaged in an in-depth musical exchange with Bai ethnic sanxian folk artist Zhang Shuxian. Though their styles differ, both original musicians share a mutual passion for music and a relentless pursuit of artistic ideals. As one of China’s most influential rock music leaders, Teacher Wang Feng hopes to help more people discover Dongjing music, understand it, and promote China’s time-honored ethnic music traditions.

Ultimate Bliss Journey Team

Within the Ultimate Bliss Journey team were two special members—Chen Can and Zhou Chuyan—who earned the rare opportunity to join Teacher Wang Feng on this trip due to their outstanding performances in the preliminary and knockout rounds. Their mission was to search the streets of Dali for ethnic and modern musicians to form mixed bands and compete in PK battles. The first group included a young European guitarist and ruan player, a Hong Kong drummer, and elderly members of the local Nan Zhuang Ancient Music Association. The second group featured a keyboardist who played by blowing into the instrument, a lead singer they met at a zhajiangmian (noodles with soybean paste) shop, and their friends. As the guiding mentor for Dali, Wang Feng returned to the judge’s seat for the first time since The Voice—not on a swivel chair, but on a straw mat in a mountain village temple.

The "Finding the Pioneers Around Us" event, hosted by The North Face, has been held for its third edition since 2011. Comprising five stops, the successful completion of the fifth marks the imminent conclusion of the 2013 "Finding the Pioneers Around Us" campaign. Since its launch on February 27th of this year, the activity has garnered widespread attention and support from outdoor enthusiasts. Volunteers, under the guidance of five mentor categories—Polar Pioneer Mentor mountaineer Wang Jing (Flying Snow Jingjing), Eco Pioneer Mentor Chen Liangzhong, Spiritual Pioneer Mentor Yu Yuntian, Humanities Pioneer Mentor Li Shuankuo, and Rock Pioneer Mentor Wang Feng—ventured to five extreme regions to find those with brave hearts. Whether it was the Sherpas encountered on Mount Everest, the scientific researchers protecting Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys in Baima Snow Mountain, the directors devoted to making documentaries in Shangri-La, the indigenous people preserving nearly lost cultures near Kawagarbo, or the artists carrying forward Dongjing music in Dali, Yunnan—all are brave pioneers. Their stories are meant to inspire more people to overcome fear and forge their own life paths.
