Nile River section in Uganda
According to a report on the Qatar-based Al Jazeera website on December 2, on Sunday, a 31-year-old British explorer began his trekking journey along the Nile River. If he successfully completes this expedition, he will become the first person in the world to trek the entire length of the Nile.
According to the BBC, British Army Parachute Regiment Captain Levison Wood will begin walking along the Nile from the highlands of Rwanda. The full journey spans 6,839 kilometers, and he is expected to complete the trip in 12 months.
Levison Wood, currently a photojournalist and also the leader of an expedition team, will follow the White Nile all the way to the Blue Nile at Khartoum, the capital of Sudan. This journey will take him through six countries and across some of the most remote regions in the world.
The BBC stated that Levison Wood’s daring adventure is one of the most courageous expeditions of its kind, reflecting the perseverance and prudence of the British spirit, while also making a new contribution to British exploration efforts in Africa.
Levison Wood said the idea of trekking the entire length of the Nile originated from 19th-century British explorers. In 2010, British explorer Ed Stafford completed a trek along the entire length of the Amazon River.
He also mentioned that over the past few years, he has traveled to Africa many times, and this journey will be yet another opportunity for him to explore the continent.
The BBC also reported that if the expedition goes as planned, Levison Wood will spend his birthday on the edge of a swamp in Tanzania.
