US mother walks a kilometer in agony to save son after plane crash.
【Global Times Comprehensive Report】According to the UK's Daily Mail on December 1, a single-engine Cessna 208 aircraft carrying 10 people en route to St. Mary's, Alaska, crashed around 6:30 pm that day due to ice fog, resulting in the deaths of four people including the pilot, and four others were seriously injured. The injured have been taken to hospital for treatment.
Melanie Coffee, 25, and her 5-month-old son were among the passengers. After the crash, the surviving Melanie, desperate to save her child, endured excruciating pain in her chest and walked one mile (approximately 1,609 meters) through a desolate mountain village to find a rescue team. Due to heavy fog, rescuers had to use vehicles and snowmobiles to locate the crash site. Tragically, her son did not survive. Melanie, enduring her grief, helped rescue other trapped individuals.
“I think she’s truly a hero in this situation,” said Fred Lamont Jr., an officer with the St. Mary’s Police Department. The village is remote with limited road access, and residents rely on planes for transportation. Clint Johnson, an investigator with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), stated that the cause of the crash remains unclear and the investigation is still in its early stages. Two other investigators have also been dispatched to the scene to gather information from traffic authorities. Jim Hlckerson, head of the airline operating the aircraft involved, described the incident as “an unspeakable tragedy” and is collecting information to provide answers and alleviate the suffering caused by the event.
