The National Taichung Theater is Taiwan’s first national performance venue to open in thirty years,8/26Trial operations began,9/30and it officially opened. Designed by architect Toyo Ito based on his unique idea of an “Acoustic Cavern,” the structure recreates a natural habitat through curved walls, flowing water, and cave-like forms amidst the city's concrete architecture, becoming a new landmark for Taichung and transforming the city’s artistic life.

To kick off the opening of the National Taichung Theater, special events were held from August 26 (Fri) to August 28 (Sun), inviting everyone to visit the theater,to embody a fluid, water-like presence and experience the flow of sound, light, and air in every corner of the Acoustic Cavern, savoring the subtle details throughout the exhibition space. During the event, those wearing azure blue tops had the chance to receive a limited-edition Plush Sea commemorative fan.

The grand opening ceremony, “Purity・Water,” was specially curated by senior drama scholar Chiu Kun-liang. Based on the concept of “renewal,” it draws from the idea of rivers nurturing civilization, extracts the ritual structure of temple inauguration ceremonies, and collaborates with contemporary outstanding artists to create a ceremonial theater infused with modern artistic aesthetics. The plaza of the theater has been transformed into a visual exhibition/Community Participation/as well as a multifunctional stage for the ritual cauldron platform.

The National Taichung Theater houses three professional theaters and one multifunctional space, the “Corner Salon.” Coupled with the square under the blue sky and white clouds, the outdoor theater, and the rooftop sky garden, the theater can be described as a stage of charm from the inside out, from the ground to the roof.

The Grand Theater, with its warm red base, gracefully welcomes audiences, sharing an intimate emotional experience up close. Located on the second floor of the venue, it has a total of 2,007 seats. Its spatial design primarily aims to create an environment that is spacious and comfortable. To ensure optimal viewing for the audience, it adopts a 3D surround layout, ensuring excellent sightlines from every seat. Upon entering the space, audiences are enveloped in a refined and joyful atmosphere.
