The North Coast of New Taipei City and Yehliu Geopark were chosen as an "Editor's Pick" for "Best Summer Travel 2016" by National Geographic. The selection was mainly due to Yehliu Geopark’s unique rock formations, which have been sculpted by seawater and strong winds over time. Natural wonders such as the Queen’s Head, Fairy’s Shoe, Tofu Rock, Sea Caves, and Candlestick Rock make the Yehliu area a diverse outdoor classroom. Additionally, Fugui Cape Park and Taiwan’s northernmost Fugui Lighthouse are also highly recommended.

In addition to Yehliu Scenic Area, a famous tourist attraction in northern Taiwan, the North Coast is well worth exploring. It encompasses the eastern part of New Taipei City and the Guanyinshan National Scenic Area, generally referring to the coastal highway stretching from Tamsui to Yehliu. This area crosses through Wanli, Yehliu, Jinshan, Shimen, Shipai, and Tamsui. The coastline features golden beaches, azure waters, and majestic mountain views, creating a picturesque strip of scenery suitable for day trips or longer stays. White Sand Bay, Shallow Water Bay, and Emerald Bay are paradises for young people seeking water activities. In the evening, visit Jinshan Old Street to sample local specialties such as agar jelly, grilled sweet potatoes, and Jinshan duck. After exploring the North Coast, you can also visit Fisherman’s Wharf and enjoy a sensory experience at the Fisherman’s Stage — watch the sunset, feel the sea breeze, listen to music, drink beer, and eat grilled fish. This year, Fisherman’s Wharf is different. The New Taipei City Government Tourism and Travel Bureau has created a performance stage dedicated to Taiwanese original music, giving bands a dedicated space to share their creations. At the same time, they are developing Fisherman’s Wharf into Taiwan’s first hub for independent music bands.

Transportation Info for Visiting the North Coast: Getting to the North Coast is very convenient via public transport. Take a shuttle bus from the airport to Taoyuan High-Speed Rail Station, then take a 20-minute high-speed train to Taipei Main Station. From there, transfer to the MRT heading north to Tamsui Station. Tamsui Station is your gateway to the North Coast. Right outside the station, you’ll find the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle — Crown North Coast Line bus. You can purchase a one-day unlimited pass on this bus that covers the route between Tamsui Station and Guhou Fishing Port. The Taiwan Tourist Shuttle travels along scenic routes in the North Coast area and stops at various tourist attractions as well as visitor service centers along Provincial Highway 2.
