Beauty in the Small: Innovation and Heritage at Taipei 2016 World Stamp Exhibition

“Taipei2016The World Stamp Exhibition will be105held in the year10of21to26at Hall1of the Taipei World Trade Center. This is the first time our country has applied to the International Federation of Philatelic Associations(FIP)and been approved to host a world stamp exhibition, which is truly rare. In recent years, Chunghwa Post has actively participated in international philatelic activities. Aside from observing and understanding global trends, it also promotes Taiwan’s postal image and cultural creativity services.

The "Taipei 2016 World Stamp Exhibition" coincides with the 120th anniversary of the founding of Chunghwa Post (from 1896 to 2016), and its theme is set as “Heritage and Innovation,” symbolizing the postal service leaping through time and embracing new frontiers. The overall planning of the stamp exhibition aims to be international and globally minded, with a series of themed activities planned for each exhibition day to convey Chunghwa Post’s corporate image of valuing public welfare and environmental protection. The event will also attract younger audiences through anime-themed activities, making it an international cultural and artistic feast.

 

• 10/21 Postal Day

Every year on October 9 is World Post Day, established by the Universal Postal Union (UPU). This year, the World Stamp Exhibition is held from October 21 to 26, and also marks the 120th anniversary of Chunghwa Post. The first exhibition day is themed around Postal Day to celebrate on a larger scale.

• 10/22 Designers’ Day

Design is an expression of cultural creativity, stamps are creative products, and the stamp exhibition is also a cultural activity. With splendid cultural and creative art design events, the exhibition combines stamp design with cultural creativity to showcase how beauty in the small can be both inherited and innovated.

• 10/23 Anime Day

This exhibition day is themed around anime. Activities could include a pre-exhibition warm-up campaign — a stamp anime creation competition. Winners will be announced and awarded at the pre-exhibition press conference, and their works will be displayed in the themed area. During the exhibition period, spotlight activities (such as anime artist autograph sessions) will be held, and philatelic products such as bookplates will be issued based on anime works, combining the event with stamp elements to enhance young people’s interest in philately.

• 10/24 Charity Day

Corporate social responsibility means “taking from society and giving back to society.” Chunghwa Post is keeping up with the trend by using charity as a theme and integrating it with public welfare activities. Stamp (and philatelic product) charity sales will be held in the exhibition stage area, and a blood donation vehicle will be set up outside the venue, along with a life insurance booth promoting voluntary blood donation, showcasing the postal exhibition’s care for public welfare, enhancing social perception and media exposure.

 

• 10/25 Environment Day

Saving energy, reducing carbon emissions, and addressing the crisis of global warming are common challenges for humanity. The stamp exhibition uses environmental protection as its slogan, holding related artwork competitions, issuing eco-themed stamps, and setting up a themed area with eco-friendly materials, inspired by the “Taipei 2010 Flower Expo Eco-Ark.”

• 10/26 Formosa Day – F.I.P. Day (Fédération Internationale de Philatélie Day)

Taiwan is known as Formosa (the beautiful island) and boasts rich natural scenery, as well as abundant natural and cultural resources. During the stamp exhibition, it is suggested to reorganize and repackage past Taiwan-related theme stamps, and reissue them, along with a special Formosa album, planning several types of themed areas to showcase Taiwan’s beauty to the world.
 

It is worth mentioning that this World Stamp Exhibition will host the 4th Fédération Internationale de Philatélie (FIP) World Stamp Championship, the highest-level competition in the philatelic world, where top philatelists from around the globe gather to compete for the championship’s top awards.

At this year's World Stamp Exhibition in New York, China will showcase five rare and valuable stamp collections, including the "Pantalon Stamps and Their Overprints," "History of the Qing Dynasty National Post," "Postal History of Yunnan," "Dutch East Indies Airmail 1920–1942," and "Dental Health"—each collection with its own unique features.
