Following the passing of the popular koala mascot at Taipei’s Muzha Zoo, Patrick, the beloved giant panda Jia Jia also passed away on October 16 at the remarkable age of 38 through euthanasia. Jia Jia moved to Hong Kong Ocean Park in 1999. At 38 years old, she was approximately 110 years old in human terms, and her age has been officially recognized by the Guinness World Records as the longest-lived giant panda ever kept in captivity.

Hong Kong Ocean Park stated that giant panda Jia Jia had been in poor health recently, with her food intake suddenly dropping from over 10 kilograms to around 3 kilograms. Her weight also rapidly decreased, and she became too weak to do anything but lie down. Based on humanitarian grounds, veterinarians from the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department and Hong Kong Ocean Park decided to euthanize Jia Jia.
