A Century of Historic Charm: The Former Tainan District Court from the Japanese Colonial Era Opens to the Public

The Former Tainan District Court, a national second-class historic site and one of the three classic architectural structures from the Japanese colonial period, had been closed for renovation in recent years. After three years of restoration, it reopened to the public on November 8, 2016, and hosted the “Charm of the Historic Courthouse Exhibition,” with daily visitor limits in place.

The Former Tainan District Court was designed and constructed in 1912, and completed in 1914. It was designed by Morioka Matsunosuke, an engineer of the Taiwan Governor-General's Office, and exudes a strong Western architectural style. It was directly under the jurisdiction of the Tainan District Court under the Taiwan Governor-General's Office. The building features a predominantly Baroque style, with a pedimented portico composed of eight columns. The square corner pillars are closely spaced, while the central pillar stands independently atop its pedestal. The refined and elegant European-style architectural form was quite rare in Taiwan at the time.

As the only surviving courthouse from the Japanese colonial era in Taiwan, the Former Tainan District Court is even more precious. Its romantic and elegant Baroque-style columns and red brick walls have made it a popular spot for wedding photographers, as well as a must-visit attraction for tourists and history enthusiasts exploring Tainan.
