Every March and April, Japan is filled with the romantic atmosphere of pink petals falling like rain. The Japan Meteorological Corporation has recently released its 2017 cherry blossom blooming forecast. This year’s blooming period is generally 2 to 4 days earlier than the average of previous years. In Tokyo, blossoms are expected to open on March 22, in Osaka on March 28, and in Kyoto on March 27. The predicted blooming date refers to when the first blossoms open, at which point around 50% to 70% of the buds are still closed. Full bloom is reached when about 80% of the blossoms have opened. Typically, it takes 5 to 7 days after the initial bloom for full bloom to occur—this is when cherry trees are at their most beautiful and marks the best time for cherry blossom viewing in Japan. In northern Japan, blossoms will gradually begin to appear only after around April, so travelers can start checking their itineraries and planning ahead.
