The film tells the story of5Saroo Brierley (played by Dev Patel), who lives in a small Indian village with his mother and brother. One day, he follows his brother to look for work, but because Saroo is too tired, his brother asks him to rest and sleep on a station bench. When Saroo wakes up, he can’t find his family and runs to look for his brother on a train, only to be taken thousands of miles away to Kolkata. Illiterate and unable to speak the local language, Saroo ends up homeless on the streets.
