Japan’s cherry blossom season is just around the corner, and not only locals but also tourists from other countries are closely watching the timing of the blooms. Various weather bureaus have been providing the latest forecasts. Although the latter half of 2016 saw higher-than-average temperatures, January 2017 was colder than usual, so the average remains similar to previous years. However, temperatures in the Kanto region were higher, leading to an earlier bloom forecast there compared to past years. Tokyo is predicted to see its earliest bloom on March 9, while most other regions will bloom around April.

Most areas in the Tohoku region, including much of Hokkaido, will see blooms in May. As May coincides with Japan’s Golden Week, many tourists are expected to visit for cherry blossom viewing. Also, please note that the current forecasts indicate the bloom date, and there is typically a gap of 5 to 10 days before the optimal viewing period known as the “full bloom” (mankai). Travelers are encouraged to plan their cherry blossom trips early and keep an eye on updated forecasts from meteorological agencies.
