The story follows “Ishida Shouya,” an extremely misanthropic teenager who loathes “boredom” and lives by the motto “cheerful, fun, and adventurous!” One day, a deaf girl named “Nishimiya Naoka” transfers into his class. Unable to communicate smoothly with her classmates except through sign language and a notebook, Naoka becomes a target for Shouya, who seizes the chance to lead the other students in bullying her.
