The trend of overseas shopping for Japanese appliances continues to grow, and among them, beauty appliances have become especially popular among women, making them a must-buy category for tourists visiting Japan—or items they ask friends to bring back if they can’t purchase them themselves, or turn to overseas shopping services. In recent years, the legendary hair dryers that have remained popular for years have gone through several generations but still enjoy tremendous support from female consumers, gradually forming two camps of fans. One camp loves Panasonic’s focus on negative ions, which in 2016 launched the Platinum Nano Hydro Ion NA98 (EH-NA98), a hair dryer that not only styles your hair but also cares for your skin. The other camp favors TESCOM, a brand beloved by Japanese salons, which doesn’t just offer negative ions but also features a unique collagen cartridge in the TCD4000, said to blow collagen into your hair.In addition, both brands’ hair dryers boast powerful airflow (for fast drying), multiple heat and cold settings, and intelligent temperature control. When the Japanese yen is weaker, it’s a great opportunity for many women to make the purchase.

Panasonic’s Latest Hair Dryer NA98 vs. TESCOM’s Best-Selling Longseller TCD4000

Notably, Panasonic’s latest hair dryer, the NA98, has been available in Taiwan since January 2017, priced at NT$6,290. With strong advertising featuring endorser Kiko Mizuhara, women’s awareness when choosing a hair dryer has significantly evolved from merely “drying hair conveniently” to considering multiple factors. The consumer mindset of using these beauty appliances for self-beautification has grown stronger. Meanwhile, TESCOM’s TCD4000, which claims to blow collagen into your hair, has remained consistently popular since its launch in 2013. In September 2016, TESCOM released the TCD5000TW, a Taiwan-exclusive model, advertised as “Made in Japan” (though it’s not available in Japan either—don’t ask for overseas shopping on this one), priced at NT$4,490. It introduced platinum collagen functionality for skin care while styling, intensifying the battle between “Platinum Nano Hydro Ion” and “Platinum Collagen.”

The TESCOM Hair Dryer TCD5000TW Available Only in Taiwan

Since new models of hair dryers are released fairly frequently, those seeking the ultimate hair dryer might consider not only traveling to Japan during times of favorable exchange rates to buy in person or ask someone to purchase one, but also looking into some older bestsellers that have recently been replaced—price differences can be significant, allowing you to compare and choose based on your needs and budget.
