If you want to see the “giant water lily,” famous for its massive leaves that can support a person’s weight, besides the ones in Guanyin, Taoyuan or Baihe, Tainan, there’s now a new option for locals. Taipei’s Shuangxi Park has resumed cultivating giant water lilies. Once you enter Shuangxi Park, you can see the giant water lilies covering the pond surface, and by registering, you’ll have the chance to experience the fun of sitting on one.

Giant water lilies are native to the tropical regions of South America. After being introduced to Taiwan, they have mainly been cultivated in Baihe District, Tainan City and Guanyin District, Taoyuan City. In 2013, they were successfully cultivated and displayed for the first time in Shuangxi Park, and in 2014, a riding activity was held. The event received an enthusiastic response and was deeply loved by residents. However, due to water shortages across Taiwan, it was not continued afterward. This year, to make it easier for people to enjoy up close and experience the thrill of “lightness skills on water,” the giant water lilies have been specially replanted in the classic and charming Shuangxi Park.

The “2017 Giant Water Lily Magical Floating” event is expected to open at Shuangxi Park on August 16. It is believed that by then, the giant water lily leaves will be even more spectacular. The event will last for 2 to 3 weeks, with several floating experience sessions arranged each day. Each session can accommodate about 40 to 50 participants on average. This year, it is planned to increase the load-bearing capacity of the giant water lilies to 60 kilograms, allowing more people to experience floating on water.
