Taiwan’s Only Sumo Ring Opens – Traditional Tang-Style Architecture Sparks Buzz

Daxi Zhongzheng Park was established in 1909, covering an area of approximately 4 hectares. In its early days, it housed a ferry terminal and was known for scenic spots such as “Jin Gui Gui Fan” (Golden Egrets Returning Home) and “Fei Qiao Wo Bo” (Flying Bridge Lying on Waves), making it the most picturesque and culturally rich park in Daxi with a century-long history. As part of the “Daxi Slow City” initiative, the city government has built a “Cliffside Trail” along the terraced cliffs of the Dahan River west of Zhongzheng Park, linking Peace Old Street and Zhongshan Old Street. Using solid Taiwan cypress native to the island, they have constructed rustic Tang-style pavilions to restore the former Japanese-era sumo ring, making Daxi an ideal destination for cultural strolls.

In the past, Daxi Zhongzheng Park housed a sumo ring, a public hall, and the Daxi Shrine. After the war, the park remained a focal point of life for Daxi residents, with Peace Old Street and Zhongshan Old Street gradually forming the old town area. The “Daxi Slow City” initiative includes plans such as undergrounding cables and wires in the old town area, extending Peace Old Street to Zhongshan Old Street, establishing the Daxi Wooden Art Ecological Museum, visitor center, Daxi Farmers’ Association warehouse, and a multi-functional sports center at Daxi Elementary School—many of which have been planned or completed.

The circular plaza within Daxi Zhongzheng Park features a Tang-style wooden pavilion and a dirt ring used for sumo training. It serves as a venue for cultural events. Additionally, in 2017, the World Sumo Championships were held at the Taoyuan Arena, attracting sumo wrestlers from 50 countries to compete in Taiwan.
