Ueno Zoo’s Panda Cub Sparks Hype — Seven Must-Buy Adorable Merchandise Items

Ueno Zoo’s panda cub Xiang Xiang, born this June, is not only the first panda cub born at the zoo in 29 years but also the latest animal star capturing nationwide attention in Japan. To celebrate, Ueno Zoo has specially arranged public viewings through a lottery-based reservation system. Various shops and restaurants in the Ueno area have also launched numerous panda-themed merchandise and limited-edition meals, creating a vibrant “panda atmosphere” to mark the cub’s arrival.

1. YOKU MOKU Launches “Panda Mini Cigar Puff Pastry”

Established in 1969, Tokyo-based brand YOKU MOKU is famed for its cigar-shaped puff pastries, which are among the must-buy souvenirs for travelers visiting Japan and are extremely popular with locals. To commemorate the birth of panda cub Xiang Xiang, the brand has specially launched “Panda Mini Cigar Puff Pastry,” featuring cute designs of panda parent and cub, and is available exclusively at Matsuzakaya Ueno, ecurt Ueno, and Tokyo Station First Avenue.

2. Sugar Butter Tree Launches “Panda Sugar Butter Sand Tree” and “Panda Stationmaster Gift Box”

Globally renowned for its sugar butter sandwich cookies, Sugar Butter Tree has also released two panda-themed products to celebrate the cub’s birth: “Panda Sugar Butter Sand Tree” and “Panda Stationmaster Gift Box.” Both feature adorable designs, with classic sandwich cookies adorned with panda patterns that are almost too cute to eat.
