The “Happy GOGO” mini lantern is designed based on the bold and fearless spirit of the Taiwanese dog. Its movable limbs allow it to stand or sit, vividly showcasing the lovable appearance of the Taiwanese dog. Mini lantern designers Hong Shin-fu and Chang Chia-lu noted that if you look closely, you’ll notice small silhouettes of Taipei 101, natural mountains and forests, and century-old temples on the lantern, representing Taipei’s iconic imagery through the ages.
This year’s mini lantern also features a new attempt: a DIY painting version, but limited exclusively to all first-grade students (“Xiao Yi”) in Taipei City. This DIY paintable “Happy GOGO” mini lantern will be distributed by the Taipei City Government Education Bureau to all public and private elementary school first graders in Taipei—one lantern per student—closely integrating school curriculum with seasonal festivities as a celebratory gift for first graders starting their new school life.
This year’s mini lantern designer, paper-cutting artist Hong Shin-fu, happens to be the designer of the 2006 Taipei Lantern Festival mini lantern. Back then, his uniquely created paper-cut lantern craft became an instant trend. This year, he takes on the challenge once again to design the Year of the Dog mini lantern, using the Taiwanese dog as inspiration and incorporating the dog’s honest and affectionate charm into the lantern design.
