Pure White Tofu Rock – IG’s New Hotspot, a Stunning Sight Rivaling South America’s Salt Flats

Aside from the famous tofu rock scenery along the Touqian River in Hsinchu, a similarly stunning tofu rock-like landscape has recently emerged near Nanzao Fishing Port.

This new hidden gem, the "Fish Scale Stairway," is located along the coast near the international kite-flying competition venue. Stacked layers of pure white, tofu-like stone bricks paired with endless ocean views resemble Argentina’s salt flats, hence earning the nickname “Little Salt Flat.”

Nanzao Fishing Port has a tidal range of 3.5 meters, so slope protection works are required around the breakwaters. This time, the city government opted for more aesthetically pleasing native concrete blocks to construct artificial wave-dissipating blocks, specially designed in the shape of fish-scale-shaped stepped blocks to provide safe access points for visitors to get close to the shore.

The pure white Fish Scale Stairway, together with the blue sky, white clouds, and sea, creates a healing view that has become a new hot spot for IG check-ins. Aside from seeing the Little Salt Flat, visitors to Nanzao Fishing Port can also head to the area around the tourist service center, where Mediterranean-style blue-and-white architecture awaits.

For those seeking more unique sights, you can also visit the tofu rocks at Touqian River in Zhubei or explore the green stone slots at Laomei on the northern coast. The Touqian River tofu rocks are also artificial wave-dissipating blocks used to reduce riverbed erosion, while the Laomei green stone slots are a seasonal spectacle from March to May, where large patches of green algae cover the volcanic stone slots, creating a curious and beautiful sight.
