Hong Kong’s “Tai Kwun” is the former colloquial name for the former police headquarters, consisting of three groups of statutory heritage sites: the former Central Police Station, the former Central Magistracy, and Victoria Prison, which together include as many as 16 historic buildings and outdoor spaces located in Hong Kong’s commercial center, bearing witness to over 170 years of Hong Kong’s history. It is now undergoing conservation and revitalization efforts, with plans to create a heritage site with a distinctly trendy feel, restoring its former glory.

Under the “Central Police Station Compound Revitalisation Project” implemented by The Hong Kong Jockey Club in collaboration with the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, to meet community needs for adaptive reuse, two new buildings will be constructed: the “Jockey Club Gallery,” which will house an art museum and contemporary art space, and the “Jockey Club Innovation Tower,” which will feature a performance venue for performing arts, film screenings, and educational activities.

This conservation and revitalization project adopts recommendations from local and international experts and incorporates feedback from the local community. After ten years of work, a heritage-led approach has been used to redevelop the historical building complex. Every building and every room has been meticulously redesigned and is expected to become one of Hong Kong’s newest popular heritage photo spots.
