Burano, also known as the Colorful Island or Lace Island, is a beautiful little fishing village and an island in the Venetian Lagoon of Italy, renowned for its lace weaving. The island is located seven kilometers from the main Venetian island, and it takes 40 minutes by boat to travel between the two.

Legend has it that fishermen’s wives painted their house exteriors in bright colors so their husbands could find them easily when returning home through thick fog. However, the truth is that during the outbreak of the Black Death in the Middle Ages, infected residents painted their walls with whitewash (lime) for disinfection, while uninfected ones painted theirs in colorful hues to distinguish themselves.

Today, Burano continues the tradition, so homeowners must apply to the government for permission to repaint. With partial government funding, a selection of approved colors is offered to ensure the island retains its beautiful palette. Stepping into Burano feels like entering a fairytale world full of charm.

Since the fishing village is situated in the lagoon, boats are the sole means of transport to the outside world. Almost every household owns a small boat and typically heads to Venice every two or three days to buy daily necessities.

The island is home to many shops selling lace clothing, scarves, accessories, and other small items. Their lace craftsmanship has evolved to the point where almost anything can be adorned with lace—from bridal gowns and baby clothes to wine bottles, bags, bookmarks, and even umbrellas..
