\n\nWhat!? Taiwan has a Disneyland too? Located on Meilishan Mountain in Hualien, there is a famous landscape landmark — a “Mickey Mouse” statue — which is a must-visit photo spot when you’re in Hualien. In addition to taking photos with Mickey Mouse, you can also walk along the Meilishan hiking trail and enjoy the city view from the mountain. A must-visit when traveling in Hualien!\n
The “Mickey Mouse” was originally an abandoned military clock tower, but was later transformed into a playful Mickey Mouse statue by sculptor Yu Wang-chiu, and still stands firmly to this day.
The whimsical and somewhat retro-looking Meilishan “Mickey Mouse” has a history of 30 years and is a shared childhood memory for many Hualien residents. It is also a popular photo spot for visitors. However, due to years of sun and rain exposure, parts of its surface have peeled off and cracked. It was recently repainted and refurbished, and now the Mickey Mouse looks brand new again!\n
The famous landmark Zhonglie Temple on Meilishan offers a bird’s-eye view of the vast Hualien cityscape.
Meilishan Mountain, where the Mickey Mouse is located, stands tall in the plains of Hualien City and was once one of the Eight Scenic Spots of Hualien. From the mountain, you can admire the vast, blue expanse of the Pacific Ocean and watch the Meilixi River winding at the foot of the mountain. Besides being a popular tourist destination, it is also a favorite spot for locals to exercise in the morning and evening.\n
To the south of Meilishan is Zhonglie Temple, which was originally a Japanese Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of Hualien Port during the Japanese colonial period. It was later rebuilt in the 1980s (the 70th year of the Republic of China) into a structure modeled after traditional northern Chinese architecture. The elegant and solemn building is an important landmark in Hualien City, and also offers a panoramic view of the city's beauty.\n
