Airbnb released a survey on the travel habits of Taiwanese people, showing that domestic tourism has been gradually growing. According to Airbnb statistics, over the past year, the Taiwanese Airbnb host community welcomed more than 1.5 million guests, compared to the previous stereotype that Airbnb users were mostly foreign travelers—33% of them were actually domestic travelers.

Although the domestic tourism landscape continues to evolve, the warmth of Taiwanese people remains a highly praised feature of the country’s tourism appeal. In recent years, Taiwan’s design strength and cultural and creative industries have also gradually become key directions for tourism and hospitality development. While Taiwanese people love traveling abroad, the trend of domestic tourism is gradually being influenced by innovative travel formats represented by Airbnb, leading to a gradual rebound.

Popular domestic travel destinations such as Hualien and Taitung have seen an average annual booking growth of 53.7%, demonstrating that Airbnb not only enables international travelers to deeply understand Taiwanese culture through local hosts but also promotes domestic tourism with its innovative model, helping Taiwanese people better appreciate their own land. The survey on Taiwanese travel habits mainly revealed four key points:
1. Interpersonal interaction and connection
Despite recent reflections on the phrase “the most beautiful scenery in Taiwan is its people,” when asked about Taiwan’s tourism characteristics, nearly half of the respondents emphasized that Taiwanese people are not only friendly but also willing to lend a helping hand. Thirty-five percent were impressed by the warm hospitality of local businesses.
2. Creativity and culture elevate Taiwan onto the global stage
Regarding the integration of Taiwan’s design strength, cultural creativity, and tourism, 70% of respondents affirmed that this trend allows travelers to experience Taiwan’s unique and innovative cultural essence. Nearly 70% also believe it serves as a way to preserve cultural traditions and appreciate Taiwanese history. For example, Playful Hostel incorporates the concept of exhibitions into its accommodations, showcasing works by local Taiwanese designers to international visitors.

3. The rise of domestic family travel
Seventy percent of respondents cited transportation and language convenience as reasons for choosing domestic travel, which are often also key considerations for family trips. Airbnb has served over 62,000 Taiwanese guests from various regions in this service, and for some popular domestic tourist spots, steady growth can be observed in booking volumes.
4. Strengthening local communities and promoting development
Seventy-five percent of respondents stated that they have traveled abroad an average of 2.2 times and domestically 4.5 times over the past three years. However, in a small quiz on Taiwanese travel knowledge, only about 30% of locals could answer correctly, indicating there’s still much about their own land that Taiwanese people have yet to explore and experience.

For international travelers, Taiwan’s greatest appeal still lies in its hospitality culture. According to Airbnb statistics, nearly one-fifth of Taiwanese hosts are Superhosts—recognized for positive guest reviews—and this places Taiwan second in Asia only to Japan. A willingness to share hidden gems that only locals would know also makes Airbnb hosts highly popular among travelers.
