Withered trees, overcast skies, and grayish-yellow hues are hallmarks of winter. As the vibrancy of colors fades into muted grays, some places take on an even more desolate look in winter compared to spring and summer. Below are three barren-style IG hotspots across northern, central, and southern Taiwan, where photos evoke a lonely, weathered feeling as if forgotten by the world—very atmospheric.

1. Yangmingshan National Park

Taipei’s Yangmingshan National Park has recently become a popular IG spot. Trails such as Qintian Gang, Lengshui Pit, and Qixing Mountain are covered with silvery-white silvergrass, making them incredibly photogenic. Walking through the melancholic silvergrass fields, you can feel the strong winter ambiance. Endless hills and valleys of silvergrass create a starkly desolate scene.

2. Zhigaozhen Trail

Located in Wuri, Taichung, the Zhigaozhen Trail is a local hidden leisure gem. The elevation gain from the trail entrance to the peak at Xuetian Mountain is only 80 meters, making it an easy hike. Along the way into the hills, the trail is surrounded by endless silvergrass fields. The withered yellow grass stems give off a strong desolate feeling, and apart from the grass and the path, no other buildings are visible—offering a truly barren atmosphere.
