The annual “Hualien County Indigenous Peoples Joint Harvest Festival” kicked off on the 22nd, this year themed around the Bunun tribe, featuring the most iconic eight-part harmony derived from the sound of bees. After a series of performances showcasing the clear singing voices of indigenous peoples, the grand finale “thousand-person dance” brought the evening to a thrilling climax, with all visitors joining hands in concentric circles to dance together—creating an awe-inspiring scene.

The “Hualien County Indigenous Peoples Joint Harvest Festival” kicked off on the 22nd and will run for three days at the Meilin Track-and-Field Stadium. This year’s theme is the Bunun tribe. The three-day evening events are divided into Nights of Abundance, Heavenly Sounds, and Martial Feats, with various groups performing songs and dances that symbolize the millet harvest and full granaries. Coupled with the traditional indigenous costumes worn by the performers, visitors can experience the cultures of the Bunun, Amis, Truku, and Sediq tribes all in one event, while feeling an abundance of blessings.
On the 23rd during the Night of Heavenly Sounds, reporters witnessed not only internationally acclaimed eight-part harmony performances but also a variety of indigenous food and drinks available outside the venue, such as roast pig, bamboo tube rice, and flying fish, as well as cultural and creative goods featuring indigenous-style woven patterns. Visitors could immerse themselves in indigenous culture through food, drink, and fun.

The most exciting highlight of the Harvest Festival is the “thousand-person dance,” where all visitors are invited into the track-and-field stadium to form concentric circles that ripple outward—a truly spectacular sight. Indigenous performers dance in the center of the circle, leading everyone in the traditional group dance. With simple steps and lively music, the atmosphere quickly reaches a fever pitch. Eventually, everyone crosses hands and runs joyfully in circles together, fully celebrating the harvest season.
The 2016 “Hualien County Indigenous Peoples Joint Harvest Festival” runs until the 24th. Tonight at the Meilin Track-and-Field Stadium there will be a Night of Martial Feats. If you’re in Hualien, don’t miss your chance to join the thousand-person dance.
