In recent years, cruise travel has become increasingly popular, but during a trip not long ago, I witnessed several cringeworthy scenes. In fact, cruise travel differs from regular travel in many ways, with numerous etiquettes to observe. To avoid embarrassing yourself, it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with these rules before your journey.
Boarding
Similar to taking a flight, cruising requires punctuality—cruise ships won’t wait for late passengers. If you’re late, you’ll just have to watch the ship sail away. Since hundreds or even thousands of travelers board on the same day, it’s wise to arrive at the port early and prepare all necessary documents in advance to streamline the check-in process. Some cruise lines offer online pre-registration, allowing passengers to fill out details online and print their boarding passes. Additionally, once aboard, you’ll receive a cruise card, which serves as your ID at sea, room key, and more—so keep it safe. Report any loss to the ship’s staff immediately.
Attire
Generally, casual and neat clothing is acceptable on cruises, but remember: never wear pajamas, slippers, or shorts in public areas. Each evening, the cruise line will announce dress code guidelines (Dress Code), typically categorized into three types: formal, semi-formal, and casual. For cocktail parties and the Captain’s Dinner, formal attire is required—men should wear dark suits with ties and dress shoes, while women should opt for evening gowns or long dresses with heels. For semi-formal occasions, men may choose whether to wear a tie. However, regardless of the occasion, never wear slippers or denim in the dining room.
Dining
Cruise restaurant seating is often arranged in “open seating,” meaning you may dine with both familiar and unfamiliar passengers. Take this as an opportunity to meet new friends from around the world and exchange stories. When dining is buffet-style, be patient and queue up, and avoid taking excessive amounts of food at once.
Enjoying Performances
Cruises offer a variety of exciting performances. Since most shows operate on a first-come, first-served basis without assigned seating, be considerate and avoid saving spots for friends or family who haven’t arrived yet. Additionally, unless explicitly permitted, recording or photography is strictly prohibited due to copyright issues. If performers invite audience participation, try not to decline—it’s a sign of respect. If you’re not keen on interacting, consider sitting toward the back.
Accommodation
Like hotels or homestays, basic lodging etiquette applies on cruises. Avoid loud noises, especially late at night, to prevent disturbing neighbors. When encountering other guests, a nod or smile is a polite gesture.
Tipping
Tipping is a common cultural practice on cruises. Throughout your voyage, staff provide various services such as luggage handling and dining assistance. Tipping is a way to show appreciation, and cruise lines usually distribute tipping envelopes the day before departure. Tipping not only acknowledges the crew’s hard work but also constitutes a significant part of their income.
Disembarking
Typically, the cruise line holds a briefing the day before disembarkation to explain the process. Pay attention to the instructions: the night before, place your packed luggage outside your cabin with the provided tags for staff to collect. Passengers with different colored tags will be guided via announcements to leave their cabins or the ship at designated times. On disembarkation morning, your final bill will be placed outside your room for review and settlement.
