Three Major Traditional Festivals of Kyoto – The Jidai Matsuri (Festival of the Ages)

Japan has many festivals, both large and small, and the over 120-year-old “Jidai Matsuri” is one of them. As one of Kyoto’s three major traditional festivals, the Jidai Matsuri is not only rich in local character but also a fantastic spot for photography and immersive travel experiences for visitors.

Speaking of its origins, the Jidai Matsuri was established to commemorate the relocation of Japan’s capital1100 and the founding of Heian Shrine.The relocation took place on(October 22nd,) which is also the date of the festival. Each year,the procession of people in period costumes held at Heian Shrine attracts numerous tourists from far and wide.

To help visitors gain a deeper understanding of the Jidai Matsuri, Kyoto City has specially opened a new cultural and commercial complex called “Kyoto 0–22,” themed around the distinctive Jidai Matsuri. Its architecture is modeled after traditional Kyoto townhouses (kyomachiya), exuding the charm of the ancient capital.

The Jidai Matsuri Museum not only houses shops offering Kyoto cuisine and traditional crafts but has also invited renowned Japanese animator Mr. Masashi Mitani to project highly realistic 3DCG scenes of the grand Jidai Matsuri procession marching through the streets, allowing visitors to experience the unique allure of the festival.
