A F4 fried rice (a luxurious combination of sea urchin roe, Angus beef, prawns, and scallops) was all the rage on Tainan’s foodie Facebook groups. It turns out that this was actually Jiājiā Catering House, a place I’d long bookmarked but never gotten around to visiting. So I made a special trip to Sanxing World, which I hadn’t been to in ages, to try their fried rice. (Way back when, there used to be a Sanxing Night Market here, though that’s probably just a memory for old-time Tainan locals. I’m glad I got to experience it.)

The decor at Jiājiā Catering House is simple, but the shop has air conditioning and a TV – not bad for a snack joint.

Latecomers can sit at the outdoor seating area!

Here’s the menu and pricing – quite an extensive selection.

From my experience, Jiājiā’s fried rice tends to have firmer grains, and the seasoning isn’t as heavy as at most other fried rice shops, making it easier on the palate. Their biggest strength compared to other fried rice spots is definitely the “ingredients” – fresh, carefully selected, and generously portioned.

The kimchi fried rice also comes with plenty of shredded pork and shrimp (whether large prawns or shrimp, the intestinal tracts are cleaned thoroughly – a definite plus).

The luxury sea urchin roe fried rice even playfully features an LV logo.

Both in flavor and presentation, it’s pretty impressive.

For a more balanced meal, you can also add a side of stir-fried greens or scallion omelet.

Top it off with a traditional-style pudding for dessert, and you’re in for a very satisfying meal~

The photo shows the less common jumbo-size version, which you can only get by reservation or if you’re lucky enough to find it. The regular-sized traditional pudding is a staple item.

Jiājiā Catering House isn’t hard to find – they have a small sign along Wǔfēi Street, and you’ll see the place just around the corner. I think if you’re coming here to eat, you don’t have to specifically go for the F4 fried rice just because it’s trendy. After all, that one takes longer to prepare, so the wait is longer. Just go with whatever catches your eye when you walk in. I’ve never had a bad plate of fried rice here. One tip, though: come right when they open to avoid the wait, and don’t come too late in the evening or you might run into the tragic fate of them being out of rice and unable to make any more. Seize the day, and eat while it’s hot~ Muah~
