During the New Year's mountain-climbing event, members of the Shaanxi Mountain Rescue Team served as guardians for the climbers. Chen Zheng, Deputy Secretary-General of the Shaanxi Mountaineering Association and a senior mountaineering coach specializing in climbing safety techniques, has participated in numerous rescue operations and possesses extensive knowledge of mountain safety. During a break in the event, the reporter asked Chen Zheng to explain the key points to consider for winter mountain climbing.
Chen Zheng believes that a good pair of outdoor hiking boots is essential for winter climbing. “Although the snow on the stone steps today has been cleared, there’s still a thin layer of ice that’s not easy to see but can cause you to slip if you’re not careful. Good hiking boots have deeper treads and harder rubber, which provides much better grip. Regular sports shoes, on the other hand, usually have shallower treads and softer rubber, making them much more slippery.”
Chen Zheng emphasized that warmth is also a critical factor when choosing clothing for winter climbs. “As altitude increases, temperatures drop significantly. Even in spring or autumn, it can get quite cold up in the mountains, let alone in winter. So, it’s essential to be well-prepared for the low temperatures, which means choosing clothing with good insulation.” He also specifically reminded that sunglasses are a must for winter climbs, as snow reflects sunlight and can harm your eyes. If you’re walking in snowy areas for an extended time, sunglasses provide necessary eye protection.
Chen Zheng also advised that since snow accumulation is common in winter, ordinary hikers should choose popular routes that are well-traveled and easier to navigate. “In winter, it’s crucial to pay close attention to weather forecasts and make a relatively accurate assessment of the climate conditions at your climbing destination.” In short, winter climbing involves more challenges, so extra caution is needed. All hikers should always keep safety first in mind.
