On January 5, the second New Year's Ice Trekking Event along the Great Wall and the Yellow River in Lao Niu Wan, Pianguan County, Shanxi, themed around national fitness, low-carbon living, health, and environmental protection, concluded. More than 300 participants, including Han Guowei, President of the China Great Wall International Trekking Club, and domestic Great Wall experts, took part in the 16-kilometer trek. The oldest participant was 74-year-old calligrapher Li Jisheng, and the youngest was 5-year-old Beijing girl Ren Yufei, both of whom completed the entire course.
At 9:30 a.m. that day, the 2012 Lao Niu Wan Great Wall and Yellow River Ice Trekking Conference commenced. Trekking enthusiasts from across the country set off from in front of the Wanghe Tower in Lao Niu Wan, descended onto the frozen Yellow River along the ancient "Zou Xikou" trading route, then proceeded westward along both sides of the Great Wall to the "confluence of the Great Wall and the Yellow River," and finally returned to the starting point at the Wanghe Tower.
