High-tech down jacket’s zipper broke and can’t be repaired
Ms. Zhou told reporters that her husband spends long hours working outdoors, so last year she bit the bullet and spent nearly 3,000 yuan on an imported down jacket from a well-known American brand. At the time, the salesperson assured her that the brand had a good reputation and that its down jackets were its flagship products, highly reliable. The jacket Ms. Zhou liked was not only filled with highly fluffy down for superior warmth but also made of special fabric that was windproof, waterproof, and durable. Plus, the brand offered excellent after-sales service. All this convinced Ms. Zhou, and she promptly made the purchase.
The jacket was indeed very comfortable, and her husband wore it throughout the winter. But this year, the zipper broke and the jacket became unwearable. Ms. Zhou took the jacket to the brand’s store hoping they could repair it, but the staff told her that since a year had passed, it was beyond the warranty period and the manufacturer would no longer be responsible. Moreover, as the jacket was imported, any repairs would require sending it back to the original factory in the U.S., which would not only take a long time but also incur high shipping and repair costs. “It’s honestly not worth it—it’s better to just buy a new one.”
Undeterred, Ms. Zhou tried taking the jacket to a tailor to replace the zipper, but two tailors turned her away. They said the jacket was a high-tech product and the zipper was integrated with the down material, not sewn on with thread, making it impossible to replace. Attempting to do so could damage the jacket further, and they’d be liable. As a result, this nearly 3,000-yuan high-tech down jacket was left unusable due to the lack of repair options.
Machine-glued, making manual repair difficult
Left with no other choice, Ms. Zhou eventually got in touch with a domestic outdoor brand headquartered in Nanjing, China. The company agreed to help repair the jacket for a corresponding fee. According to a representative from the brand, outdoor clothing generally has high requirements for windproofing and waterproofing, which means using waterproof and breathable fabrics while minimizing “holes” in the construction. That’s why the zipper on Ms. Zhou’s jacket wasn’t sewn on with thread but machine-glued to tightly bond with the fabric. Once damaged, the glue needs to be reapplied—a process that requires specific machines, which ordinary tailor shops simply can’t handle. It was revealed that reputable outdoor brands typically offer a warranty: if quality issues arise within three months, repairs or replacements are covered, and for non-human-caused leakage problems, coverage may extend to one year.
“There are many outdoor brands nowadays, and quite a few outsource production to factories. Once the order is completed, their relationship with the factory ends. When you ask them to fix a jacket, they’re no longer working with the original manufacturer, and if the jacket wasn’t made in-house, how could they fix it? Even if you send it to the original factory, it’s a hassle. Brands release so many styles every year—even if it’s the same model, it might come from different factories depending on the batch. Locating the original manufacturer requires looking up the item code and finding the responsible party. Imported brands are even more complicated—they might work with a factory in China today and one in Vietnam tomorrow. Fixing a single jacket could mean sending it back to the brand’s home country and then forwarding it to an overseas factory. So once the warranty expires, your jacket is pretty much at the mercy of fate—the manufacturers aren’t willing to take responsibility,” the representative said. Consumers shouldn’t put too much faith in brands—product quality is what truly counts.
