Asia’s first snow polo tournament sees twelve elite teams gather in Tianjin, with preliminary matches starting on February 2 as fierce competition begins.
(Tianjin, China, February 2, 2012) - Asia’s first Snow Polo World Cup, the “2012 Richemont Tianjin Snow Polo World Cup” (“Snow Polo World Cup”), will take place from February 2 to 12 at the Tianjin Goldin Metropolitan Polo Club. The event is jointly organized by the Chinese Equestrian Association, the International Federation of Polo (FIP), and co-hosted by the Tianjin Municipal Sports Bureau, the Hong Kong Polo Development and Promotion Federation, and the Tianjin Polo Association. With strong support and participation from all parties, the tournament promises to be a grand celebration of the sport.
The Snow Polo World Cup features twelve top-tier national and regional teams, all competing at the 14 to 16-goal level, making this high-end event one of the largest and most prestigious international polo tournaments. Teams from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Chile, France, England, Hong Kong, India, Italy, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United States – all members of the FIP – will see their top polo players compete in nine days of intense matches from today through February 12.
The snow polo field is about one-sixth the size of a traditional grass polo field, measuring approximately 192 meters in length and 68.5 meters in width, with a total of around 4,000 cubic meters of snow. Each snow polo team consists of just three players, and an orange ball slightly larger than the traditional grass polo ball is used. Each match is divided into three chukkas, each lasting six minutes.
