The North Face 100 Beijing International Trail Challenge is part of The North Face 100 Asia-Pacific series. First held in 2009 in Changping District, Beijing, it was the first 100-kilometer trail running event in mainland China. The 2012 race will be the fourth edition of The North Face 100 in China.
The event takes place on a Saturday in early May each year. On race day, there is a significant temperature variation between ground levels, with an average temperature of about 10°C/50°F at the start (4:30 AM) and finish (8:30 PM), and around 20°C/68°F at noon. The race features three categories: 100 km, 50 km, and 10 km. Participant numbers have risen from 3,274 in 2009 to an estimated 8,600 in 2012. The course includes a mix of roads, river trails, mountain paths, and dirt tracks.
The 100 km category is the most challenging in the The North Face 100 series, with approximately 55% of the route consisting of mountain and dirt paths, and an elevation gain and loss of up to 950 meters. The starting point is at the foot of the famous Juyongguan Great Wall, and the finish line is at the scenic Ming Tombs Reservoir, which is also the lowest elevation point of the entire course at 100 meters.

The race route passes through several scenic areas; in addition to retaining the 2009 route’s Juyongguan Great Wall, Ming Tombs Reservoir, HuYu, Mangshan National Forest Park, the Ming Tombs, and Wangbaochuan Longevity Village, the 2010 edition added picturesque spots such as Little Canyon, the Ming Dynasty Ancient City Wall, and Chestnut Forests.
