A lone rider on a bicycle is preparing to embark on a 10,000-kilometer journey along China’s borders. Yesterday afternoon, under the send-off of a group of outdoor sports enthusiasts from the Urban Yoker Club, athletic powerhouse “OOke” set off from the Huanglong Sports Center, beginning his dream-chasing expedition.
“I started getting into outdoor activities in 2008,” said “OOke,” a native of Yongkang who has lived in Hangzhou for many years. Perhaps because he grew up in the countryside, he’s not very tall, but he’s in great physical shape.
After joining the Urban Yoker Outdoor Club, he once joined friends for the “Seven Peaks Blitz.” That activity is an extreme test of participants’ stamina, requiring them to hike non-stop through seven mountain peaks from East Tianmu to West Tianmu in a single day. “There were about ten of us who went, and quite a few had to drop out midway due to exhaustion. Fortunately, I gritted my teeth and made it to the end.”
After that, “OOke” also took part in three editions of the 100-kilometer hiking event held in Shanghai, not only completing every race but also improving his time with each attempt.
The idea of cycling along the national border has been on his mind for a long time, but due to time and other constraints, it hasn’t been possible until now. “On one hand, I want to enjoy the beautiful landscapes of our country, and on the other, I want to test my own limits,” he said. It is reported that after departing from Hangzhou, “OOke” will pass through provinces including Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, Tibet, and Xinjiang. “Last year, I ran in the Hangzhou Marathon for the first time and completed the full course. This time, it’s my first long-distance solo cycling trip. I believe that only by bravely trying new things can you keep discovering a whole new side of yourself.”
