Ougang has ventured into real estate, while Anta and Li-Ning are no longer limited to footwear products. This is a rapidly changing market. Clothing retailers are starting to sell shoes, and if shoe companies remain stuck relying solely on their current products, they’ll be left behind.
After several major upheavals in the footwear market in recent years, it’s undeniable that the development path of China’s shoe industry has not been smooth—lack of standards, incomplete supporting infrastructure, and an unclear market positioning… As a result, some shoe companies are playing the “trend brand” card, while others are making aggressive moves into the outdoor industry. Seven Wolves is one of them.
It’s reported that many companies are now adopting diversified business models and entering the outdoor market, with the Jinjiang outdoor sector currently taking a mass-market approach. “Seven Wolves Footwear is no longer what it used to be,” said Zhou Shaoxiong, Chairman of Seven Wolves Industrial Co., Ltd. As one of the first companies in Quanzhou to achieve “diversified” development, Seven Wolves has already reaped the benefits. The annual sales revenue of Seven Wolves Sports has exceeded 1 billion yuan, and the sales of Seven Wolves Footwear (including leather goods) have been rising year by year. Zhou Shaoxiong made no secret of his goal: to achieve full-domain integration—from shoes to clothing, then to accessories, and ultimately to luxury goods.
Seven Wolves’ “ambition” is truly commendable. It’s understood that many well-known domestic footwear brands are also quietly transforming. Huang Youshun from Shishi Senpai Company, which designs and manufactures OEM products for domestic brands like Fu Gui Niao, Mu Lin Sen, Hong Qing Ting, and Ougang, said that if Fujian is the kingdom of casual men’s wear, then Zhejiang is truly the capital of leather shoes. Beyond footwear, many shoe companies in Jiangsu and Zhejiang have gradually started transforming and venturing into complementary sectors like clothing. “This is the general trend. In the future, those with sufficient financial strength will also enter the accessories market,” Huang Youshun said.
Although a diversified strategy can create many unexpected market opportunities for shoe companies, it’s undeniable that there are also significant risks. With a broader range of directions to explore, shoe companies have to invest considerable human, material, and financial resources, which inevitably leads to challenges such as cash flow difficulties and overly complex operations that can impact business. Moreover, project selection is crucial—if they make the wrong choices, it could lead to operational hardships, loss of focus on core brand advantages, or even cause the company to collapse entirely. Diversification is not an easy path for shoe companies. Cross-industry development often demands higher brand recognition and market awareness. While crossing boundaries is difficult, for footwear and apparel companies, it’s also essential.
According to Zhang Wenbin, Chairman of Dynamic Group Holdings Limited, the successful listing has not only injected great confidence into China’s casual footwear and apparel industry, which is at a critical stage of transformation and upgrading, but more importantly, it has provided a much broader development platform for its subsidiary brands, including Jinmaiwang and Glaive. Truly becoming footwear and apparel brand operators is no longer just a dream. “As long as you persevere, dreams will come true—whether you cross boundaries or not.”
Brand “growth potential” refers to the core strategy of how a brand, after its establishment, continues to innovate, expand, and strengthen itself, striving to enhance its brand essence to firmly grasp market influence. With the expectation of economic transformation strengthening and the consumer sector’s proportion in the macroeconomy continuously rising, the market-guiding power of branded footwear and apparel remains highly promising. The vast development prospects will spur a new round of competition among footwear and apparel brands.
