A Hidden Gem in Northern Taiwan: Tamsui's Liukuaicuo Fishing Port with Breathtaking Sunsets

I truly think many small fishing ports in Taiwan are incredibly charming—like Fenniaolin Fishing Port in Yilan with its secret beach, or Shen’ao Fishing Port near the famous Elephant Trunk Rock, and of course, this one: Liukuaicuo Fishing Port. These ports aren’t large; most consist of just a small area with a few fishing boats docked, extending toward the sea. The boats sway gently with the waves, and the water reflects the ever-changing colors of the sky, creating a serene yet dynamic scene that’s truly beautiful. (I must apologize first—I mistakenly wrote “六角厝” on my photos instead of “六块厝.” It’s Liukuaicuo Fishing Port, not Liujiaocuo or Liujiaocuo or Liujiaocuo—three times for penance, really sorry about that!)

Located in the Tunsan community along the Danjin Highway, near Sanzhi, this is an extremely secluded and peaceful spot. My dad stumbled upon this fishing port by chance, was deeply captivated, and found time to bring us here to take photos and enjoy the scenery.

Liukuaicuo Fishing Port has a history of over 50 years. Outside the breakwater, it connects to a stone weir and even features a fairly large intertidal zone. It’s said that this place was once the largest shark fishing ground in northern Taiwan. Due to environmental issues, the port has become quieter nowadays, but that doesn’t diminish our desire to watch the waves and admire the view.

There’s also a white Western-style house here—it’s a café called “Tunsan Xiaofang,” nestled right next to the fishing port. It’s a perfect spot to watch the waves and enjoy the sunset, offering a truly relaxing experience.

Beneath the fishing port, we suddenly heard a loud rumbling sound and realized an airplane was flying overhead. Who would’ve thought that in such a small, beautiful fishing port, while admiring the sunset and sea, you could also have airplanes as companions? It reminded me of Japan’s Senaga Island in Okinawa. Let the waves—or the airplanes—carry away this restless heart of mine that yearns to keep traveling.

As we waited, the sun gradually set, slowly sinking below the horizon. The light faded bit by bit, growing dimmer with each tick of the clock. Perhaps it was just a coincidence, but the round setting sun landed perfectly in the center of the port’s entrance. Golden sunlight spilled onto the waves, shimmering with the ripples like a dreamy golden beach. If it was just a lucky angle, I can only say we were incredibly fortunate to witness such an unforgettable, stunning sunset.

People standing by the breakwater, backlit by the sun, cast striking black silhouettes that added even more charm. Sitting on the breakwater to enjoy the close-up view of the sea and the sunset must be an even more delightful and relaxing experience.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, the surrounding clouds quietly turned shades of pink and purple. Even the explosion-shaped clouds became wilder. The story of the fishing port faded into the sea with the darkening sky. When the sun rises again tomorrow, it will continue to shine brightly, waiting for the small fishing boats to return safely.

By bus: [Tamsui Bus] Routes 860–865 (6 lines), 867, 874, F106 (to Tunsan Village Activity Center); [Zhongxing Bus] Route 2020, get off at Datan Bridge and walk about 1,100 meters
