Every time you travel abroad, you might spend two or three hours in the airport. The USATODAY website has compiled10 common mistakes travelers make at airports— in fact, paying attention to some details can make your journey much smoother.
1. Not downloading the airline’s app
The latest updates, such as flight delays or any other issues, will be notified through the app. It’s recommended to download the app of the airline you’ll be flying with before your trip.
2. Not checking in online
If you don’t have checked luggage, checking in online is a great way to save time, and in many cases, you can even choose your seat within 24 hours. Once you’ve done this, you can go straight to security at the airport without having to wait in line.
3. Not checking for TSA PreCheck eligibility in advance
This is a program by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration that speeds up the security screening process. If you travel frequently, it’s advisable to apply for it. Although there is a fee, it can save you a lot of time during security checks.
4. Not bringing food
Airport food is just for convenience so you don’t get too hungry — quality and price are another story. But having a small snack in your bag can really make the waiting time more pleasant. Of course, liquid foods like yogurt or salad dressing are not allowed. You can check online in advance for any food items airlines do not permit.
5. Wearing the wrong clothes
Many people consider that it gets cold on the plane, so they bring a light jacket. But more importantly, wear clothes that make it easier to go through security. Try to avoid wearing belts or clothing with metal decorations.
6. Not using the gate to check your bags
Some travelers only carry small hand luggage, which some airlines don’t check. For those airlines that do, there is usually a gate-check service available.
7. Being impolite (entitled attitude)
Often, patience and a smile can make things go more smoothly, especially when there are delays or unexpected flight situations — which are often beyond the control of ground staff. A little patience and understanding can sometimes lead to unexpected benefits.
8. Not buying an airport lounge pass
Airport lounges may not be cheap, but when flights are significantly delayed, a lounge can turn a terrible wait into a much more pleasant experience. They offer good food and a quiet, comfortable place to rest.
9. Using public airport Wi-Fi to transmit personal information
When using airport Wi-Fi, do not enter any banking details or personal identity information.
10. Not marking your luggage in a unique way
Unique markings can save you a lot of time when trying to find your luggage.
