“Everyone has become Spider-Man, grabbing the rope and kicking their legs to climb up.” Yesterday, Duyu netizen “Budeliao” posted under the title “Talking about Chongqing’s Most Awesome Spider-Man Residential Community,” saying that near Chenjiaping Station, at the top of a hill, live hundreds of households. To take a shortcut home, some clever person hung a thick hemp rope from the top of the hill. At rush hour, you can see many people grabbing the rope and, with a couple of quick “whooshes,” climbing up the rock face to get home. “Budeliao” also posted photos taken with his mobile phone at the end of the post, showing a young man in a purple T-shirt climbing up the hill while holding onto the hemp rope.

Yesterday, the reporter contacted netizen “Budeliao” and, based on the address he provided, found this “Spider-Man residential community” in Shiyang Village, Chenjiaping. The reporter saw that this community is built on a hillside, where a section of the hill is only about 5 meters high and embedded with many large rocks. A thick hemp rope is hanging from the top of this section. Upon closer inspection, it can be seen that the rope is tied to an iron railing at the top and is made up of several connected segments.
At 13:10 yesterday, after waiting near the residents’ “climbing spot” for more than 10 minutes, the reporter saw a middle-aged man in a red top approach the “climbing spot.” He grabbed the rope with one hand and kicked off a protruding rock with one foot. Despite the light rain, he skillfully climbed to the top in just a couple of moves.
A 50-year-old woman climbs over the hill in two minutes
Ms. Ai, a 50-year-old resident, has lived in this community since 2004. “I climb often, I can get up in two minutes,” Ms. Ai said. With this rope, as long as it’s not raining, many residents in the community choose to climb home, from kids to elderly women. She herself also prefers this shortcut when she’s not carrying heavy items.

Subsequently, the reporter walked about 200 meters along the foot of the hill from the “climbing spot” and finally found a staircase. After climbing the staircase and a slope, there was a garbage dump swarming with mosquitoes and flies. About 20 meters further ahead was where the residents lived.
Ms. Ai told the reporter that there are nearly ten residential buildings on this hill, housing about 300 to 400 households. The current “climbing spot” was originally a small path more than two years ago. Later, due to surrounding development, the path was chiseled into a hill-like slope. Residents had to walk back home from a distant staircase, which took about 10 minutes longer than before. Then one day, someone tied a thick hemp rope to the top of this man-made hill, and many people started using this rope to climb home.

Although this method of climbing home with a rope is convenient, does it pose safety risks? Yesterday, staff from the Shiyang Third Community Neighborhood Committee told reporters helplessly that they have long known about the existence of this climbing rope in their jurisdiction and have warned residents many times about its dangers. They have even cut the rope with scissors several times.
