Although the Kubuqi Desert has become a relatively common route among backpackers, no outdoor adventure should be taken lightly. When it comes to gear, in the outdoors, your equipment is your lifeline. This time on the Kubuqi trip, since the route only involves a short hiking experience on the edge of the desert, the list below includes the most basic gear.
1 High-top hiking shoes are ideal, preferably in a lightweight summer model; spring/autumn versions can also handle the challenge of desert trekking and are very practical.
2 A tent is absolutely essential and can also be shared with teammates to help conserve energy.
3 Groundsheet: Place it under your tent to protect it while increasing camping comfort. It also works well to keep out sand and insects in desert and grassland environments.
4 Sleeping bag — make sure to pack it in its dedicated stuff sack, or you’ll have no room left in your backpack.
5 A sleeping mat is highly recommended and definitely beneficial for your body.
6 Trekking poles may not be used by many novice hikers, but they are absolutely helpful in the desert — bring at least one.
7 Stove and cookware set — one set is enough for three to four people. There’s nothing better than enjoying a hot, savory meal in the wild. At the very least, bring your own bowl and chopsticks so you can share meals.
8 Clothing
Wear quick-dry shirts next to your skin, and pack a long-sleeve outer layer. If you have space in your bag, it’s best to bring a thin down jacket — not to wear, but for emergencies. There have been reports of temperatures dropping by thirty degrees in desert areas, tragically freezing entire busloads of tourists. Human strength is limited in the face of natural disasters, so always pack a down jacket just in case.
9 Other Gear
Headlamp, gaiters, and a scarf
A scarf is also essential — it can protect against sand and dust, shield you from the sun, and serve as an accessory. In short, a brightly colored scarf can really enhance your trip.
Sun protection items
Sunglasses, a sun hat, and sunscreen. Prolonged sun exposure can take a serious toll on your skin, so it’s best to take proper sun protection seriously.
First aid kit
Include items such as mosquito repellent, band-aids, and Huoxiang Zhengqi Water.
Camera
Before heading into the desert, wrap the seams of your camera with packing tape or plastic wrap. Otherwise, after a few gusts of wind, you’ll hear a “creaking” sound when focusing, and photos taken with your otherwise great DSLR might end up looking like they were shot with a cheap point-and-shoot.
