Last updated 2026-09-25 — What is rock climbing? Opinions vary, and no consensus has been reached. Some say it’s a fashion trend—cool; others claim it’s a dance—beautiful; still others describe it as a display of individuality—awesome. But Liu Changzhong, principal of China’s first professional rock climbing school, tells you this: rock climbing is a way of life, a form of self-pampering. Just like rock climbing itself...

Born for the rocks, crazy for the rocks, wild for the rocks—he has completely merged himself with the cliff face. He has carved his life onto the rocks with dedication, living in symbiosis and harmony with them. He is a dancer on the cliff face. That’s Liu Changzhong. For many climbers, rock climbing is not just a sport or a hobby, but also an immensely enjoyable lifestyle and a culture. And Liu Changzhong is undoubtedly one of the most representative cultural figures in this circle. This bespectacled young man with a gentle demeanor truly resembles an intellectual when lost in thought. In fact, his name has been legendary since the 1990s, when the then up-and-coming Liu Changzhong, with the fearlessness of a fearless young calf, climbed barefoot up a natural rock face over 70 meters high and took second place. Since then, the "Barefoot Immortal" became widely known and his fame snowballed. Over ten years, he won more than 20 rock climbing championships. In 2012, Liu Changzhong’s rock climbing training camp, supported by the professional outdoor brand KAILAS, was launched in full swing across multiple cities nationwide, sparking a craze for rock climbing training and learning.
