Nepali officials confirmed on the 21st that a climbing team encountered severe weather on their descent after reaching the summit of Mount Everest, resulting in the deaths of 3 climbers and the disappearance of 2 others.
Ganendra Shrestha, a Nepali official in charge of mountaineering affairs, told the Associated Press that the deceased included a German, a Nepal-born Canadian, and a South Korean.
The German climber was 61-year-old doctor Eberhard Schaaf, who is believed to have died from symptoms of high-altitude cerebral edema; the Canadian climber was named Shriya Shah, while the name of the South Korean climber has not yet been confirmed.
Shrestha said that the weather conditions near Mount Everest were good on the mornings of the 18th and 19th, but a storm soon hit the summit. The climbers may have gotten into trouble during that period.
