“Originally, I only wanted to gather about 100 cycling friends to add some fun to the occasion, but unexpectedly, over 300 showed up. Isn’t my wedding procession impressive?” On May 26, 25-year-old Li Gen rode a bicycle with his bride, leading a grand convoy of cyclists from Kangmingyuan Community in Urumqi’s East Bajiahu area to Shuimogou Village. The group covered approximately 12 kilometers in just over an hour.
Around 10 a.m., reporters at the entrance of Kangmingyuan Community in Urumqi saw more than 300 bicycles adorned with balloons and ribbons, with riders all wearing matching red short-sleeved T-shirts. Around 11 a.m., amid cheers and applause from fellow cyclists, Li Gen emerged from his home with his bride, Shi Shao[s?], and they hopped onto their bicycles, kicking off the procession.
At the intersection of Yanhe Road and Wenquan East Road in Urumqi, two traffic police officers noticed the wedding procession and directed vehicles at four nearby intersections to stop temporarily, allowing the cyclists to pass one after another swiftly. Not only there, but the reporters also observed that at every traffic light, on-duty police officers actively managed traffic to ensure the entire bridal convoy could proceed smoothly. At intersections without police presence, all motor vehicles also yielded to the cyclists.
Along the route, passersby couldn’t help but express their admiration. Some took out their phones to take photos, while others waved to offer their congratulations.
