Post-90s backpacker robbed by motorbike thieves in broad daylight in Sanya
According to netizen “Xu Wei-Tianya Qilv,” on the evening of June 7, 2012, a post-90s backpacker was on the phone with him when suddenly the conversation was interrupted by some noise and then went silent. It wasn’t until later that night that he learned his friend had been robbed by motorbike thieves while returning to the city from Binlanghe Village. “Xu Wei-Tianya Qilv” also reminded netizens to pay attention to safety while traveling in his Weibo post.
On the afternoon of the 10th, a reporter from Nanhai Net contacted the victim, Xiao Wen, who was on a train at the time.
According to Xiao Wen’s recollection, the incident occurred between 6 and 7 p.m. on the 7th. He and three other backpackers had just finished visiting Binlanghe Village and were walking back to the city. About five or six hundred meters from a bus stop near Binlanghe Village, he was on the phone with a friend and not paying attention to his surroundings. Suddenly, a motorcycle approached from behind, and the passenger snatched his phone before speeding off. “Luckily, I wasn’t injured.” Since he was leaving Hainan the next day for his next destination, Xiao Wen did not report the incident. “I had to stick to my schedule, and I didn’t think there was much hope of getting the phone back, so I didn’t report it,” Xiao Wen told reporters. The stolen phone was purchased just over ten days ago for 1,680 yuan. He had originally been very satisfied with his trip to Binlanghe Village, but the robbery ruined his mood. “It was also my own carelessness,” Xiao Wen said.
According to another backpacker who was with them, nicknamed “Yanhuī,” he was walking behind Xiao Wen at the time. A motorcycle passed by and slowed down, but no one in the group noticed, nor did they expect a robbery to occur in broad daylight. “We didn’t see any patrols along the way. I hope they’ll step up (security patrols),” “Yanhuī” told reporters. Since the incident took place far from the village, he believes the robbery might not have happened if there had been police nearby.
Currently, Xiao Wen, “Yanhuī,” and the other backpackers are on their way to Nanning. Xiao Wen said he hopes to visit every province in China within a year and will be more cautious on the rest of his journey.
