Marching Toward the Sacred Mountain in Our Hearts
In the context of the global push for low-carbon, eco-friendly, healthy, and joyful living, the Beijing Daily Hiking Sports Center initiated and organized the Trans-Himalaya (China-Nepal) International Hiking and Trekking Competition. The event aims to promote the era’s core values of low-carbon living, health, and happiness, foster people-to-people exchanges between China and Nepal, strengthen the friendship between the two nations, and collaborate with Nepal to create a world-class large-scale themed trekking event centered around the Trans-Himalaya region. Building on this foundation and drawing inspiration from the European “Alps” model, the aim is to further develop and establish the unique, world-renowned advantages of the China-Nepal Trans-Himalaya region as a globally recognized “Trans-Himalaya (China-Nepal) International Outdoor Sports” brand for the long term.
“Himalaya,” a sacred and vast name that captivates the imagination of people worldwide, is also one of the most mysterious places on Earth. The Himalayan mountain range stretches across the southern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in eastern Asia, home to the world’s highest peaks and hiding the mysteries of human origins. Amid its rocky cliffs and glaciers lie the endless legends of the Asian continent. Today, the Himalayas are the most attractive destination for mountaineers around the globe, while also presenting them with the greatest challenges.
China and Nepal are friendly neighbors connected by a single mountain—the world-famous Himalayas. This competition begins at the Potala Palace in Lhasa, passing through Yamdrok Lake, Gangbala Snow Mountain, the North Base Camp of Mount Everest, and crossing the China-Nepal border via Zhangmu. From there, it proceeds along the southern slope of Everest, ultimately reaching Lumbini Garden, the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama. A special Buddhist ceremony will be held there to commemorate this extraordinary journey. It is reported that this trekking route, offering different perspectives of Everest from both its northern and southern slopes, is designed to fully showcase the diverse cultures of China and Nepal, deepen exchanges in religion and ethnic culture between the two countries, and allow trekkers to deeply experience the profound and enduring friendship between the two nations. Along the way, hiking enthusiasts can pay homage to the legendary abode of Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy, and immerse themselves in the ethnic culture of Nepal’s Sherpa people. A unique 15-day experience awaits you to discover the mysterious charm of Everest, this “untouched land.”
Building on the success of the first two editions of the Trans-Himalaya International Citizens' Hiking and Trekking Festival, on September 22, 2012, hiking enthusiasts will once again set out to cross the China-Nepal border on foot, traverse the “Himalayas,” visit Everest and view it from both its northern and southern slopes, and explore the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, “Lumbini,” to experience the profound history of Buddhist culture. They will also document their firsthand experiences of Tibet in China and Nepal through videos, photos, and written accounts from the perspective of ordinary citizens.
