Recently, Taobao Travel released its mid-year consumption report. Data shows that in the first half of this year, Hong Kong, known as a “shopping paradise,” was the most popular travel destination, followed by Beijing, Sanya, Shanghai, and Xiamen. At the same time, people in different cities have varying preferences when it comes to choosing travel destinations and modes of transport. Tianjin residents show a stronger preference for “seaside trips” and “hiking.”

Chengdu and Chongqing love “chance encounters”
Among the “travelers” who chose to go to Sanya to see the sea in the first half of the year, 2.24% were from Tianjin, ranking ninth among the top ten cities that “love the seaside the most.” In addition, with growing public attention to health, more and more people are taking up outdoor activities, and hiking and camping have become popular travel options. In the city rankings for users purchasing outdoor hiking gear in the first half of the year, Tianjin ranked eighth.
Looking at other cities across the country, Beijingers are the most keen on outdoor hiking; Chengdu and Chongqing residents prefer “destinations for chance encounters” like Lijiang and Yangshuo. Data shows that among the top ten cities purchasing tickets to the Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains, Lingyin Temple, Potala Palace, and Grand Buddha at Lingshan, Jiangsu Province accounted for five spots.
The report shows that Hong Kong became the most popular travel destination in the first half of this year. On the Taobao Travel platform, nearly 14% of travelers chose to visit Hong Kong for fun and shopping, with over 200,000 people booking hotels in Hong Kong. In addition, 8.4% chose to go to Beijing, and 6.1% headed to Sanya to soak up the sun. Other cities on the list of the “Top Ten Domestic Popular Travel Destinations” were Shanghai, Xiamen, Hangzhou, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Nanjing, and Chengdu.

Zhejiang ranks first in “spontaneous trips”
“Sometimes when Tony Leung is bored, he’ll head to the airport at noon on a whim, catch whichever flight he can, maybe fly to London, and spend the afternoon feeding pigeons alone in a square.” This was once a popular internet meme. The report shows that there are indeed many people who take “spontaneous trips,” with Zhejiang residents topping the list. Data shows that in the first half of the year, nearly 28,800 people from Zhejiang booked flights on the day of travel, accounting for 14% of the total and ranking first in the country; Guangdong had over 28,000 such travelers, making up 13.8%.
Shanghainese booked the most five-star hotels, accounting for 18.2%—far more than any other city; Beijing came in second with just 7.25%. Among those choosing economy chain hotels and guesthouses while traveling, people from Guangdong were the most numerous, making up 14.7%.
